Introduction Letter

Emily Bell

WST 3015 Intro to Women's Studies

12 January 2010

Jeannina Perez

Dear Nina and classmates,

My name is Emily Bell and I am a freshman at the University of Central Florida. Although credit wise I am technically considered a sophomore, I most certainly feel new around the college atmosphere. I was born and raised in Melbourne Beach, Florida, a very small beach town located about an hour and a half away from UCF. I am majoring in psychology with a minor in cognitive sciences, and hope to get my masters and doctorate degree in clinical psychology.
I was introduced to the idea of taking intro to women's studies during my senior year of high school. A student currently at UCF came to my classroom in order to persuade students to take this particular class at UCF. At first I was a little skeptical because I had no idea what it was about, but after she explained the concept of the class I was truly engaged. She explained how this class made an impact on the way she viewed society and wanted others to experience this feeling. After hearing her speak, I realized that this class might really affect me in a positive way and I wanted to find out for myself. So here I am! I want nothing more than to come out of this class more knowledgeable about the issues, history, and experiences of women. I believe everyone would benifit from taking this course because the issues dicussed are undeniably important, and I hope I get the chance to spread the knowledge I acquire onto others hopefully making an impact on their lives.
I would like to think I am considered a feminist; one who advocates the rights of women equal to those of men. Although the word in thrown around in different contexts all the time, I hope to really grasp the meaning through this course. I have many male friends in my life who have inspired me to think like a feminist. I have noticed the way they have all come to believe women are "less" than men and observed the way in which they treat women with great disrespect. Although they assure me they are just joking, I do not find it funny when they tell women to make them sandwiches...it gets old. I find negative women jokes offensive and hurtful because I believe women are smart, strong, independant, and successfull along side any man. I know that as a young woman I want to be treated equally especially in the near future throughout schooling and in my career. I cannot wait to be able to share with others, especially my male friends, what I have learned and show them that the stereotypes placed on women are false.

Sincerely,
Emily

I have read, understand, and agree to the terms of the course syllabus and the blogging protocols.
